Heating represents the “H” in an HVAC system; It’s quite common to have a combined HVAC system such as a centralised air handing unit served by either a chiller, boiler, heat pump, electrical heater battery or a combination of both heating and cooling sources.

Chilled water systems are often seen as an alternative to VRF systems. This is because chilled water systems work much the same way as direct expansion systems work. The exception is they use water in the coil rather than refrigerant. Technically speaking, water can be classified as a refrigerant. Chilled Water systems can be rather complex and many chilled water systems are found in larger commercial and industrial applications.

HEATING SYSTEMS

The main purpose of heating is to increase the temperatures inside your building to make more comfortable living conditions in the colder months of the year. The heating through a HVAC system is usually done through a central heating system being either a boiler(s) or a heat pump(s).

Traditionally conventional gas fired boilers would be installed for central heating systems to pump water around your building through heating pipes and then released through radiators to raise the temperature of a room. However, there are many other methods of heating up your building, like: -

• Distribution of hot air to different spaces using centralised heating plant
